The Backyard That Taught Me to Slow Down

What started as a practical project became a reminder that meaningful transformation rarely happens all at once.

The backyard did not come together through one dramatic makeover. It evolved through small decisions: choosing materials, moving furniture, reconsidering plants, correcting mistakes, and allowing the space to reveal what it needed.

Designing for Real Life

I wanted an outdoor space that felt beautiful, but also comfortable and usable. It needed to work for quiet mornings, casual dinners, music, conversation, and evenings around the fire.

That meant letting go of the idea that everything had to be perfect immediately. Some of the best decisions came after living with the space and noticing how we naturally used it.

What the Process Taught Me

A thoughtfully designed life is built much like a thoughtfully designed home:

  • Begin with how you want the space to feel.
  • Make one intentional decision at a time.
  • Allow room for experimentation.
  • Keep what works.
  • Change what does not.

The finished space matters—but so does becoming more confident in your own judgment along the way.
